clinical research opportunities
Student Stroke Team/Student Stroke Force (SST/SSF):
The 25 members of Student Stroke Team are research associates for Dr. Sidney Starkman, an emergency room physician and stroke neurologist at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. SST members are involved in enrolling eligible patients into clinical trials related to ischemic stroke, including collecting pertinent information related to stroke patients’ medical history and neurological deficits. In addition, SST members are privileged to attend Stroke Neurology Rounds, and witness presentations on various patients and their treatment plans by attending physicians, fellows, and residents. This provides an introduction to the field of clinical research, and allows a hands-on, interactive experience in vascular neurology. In order to apply, one must have an established UCLA GPA.
Emergency Medicine Research Associates (EMRA):
EMRA members work closely with Emergency Room physicians at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center as research associates for a variety of clinical studies associated with acute trauma. In addition to contributing to data collection and management, EMRA members are also able to shadow physicians. Students are given the opportunity to participate in an array of trials, ranging from appendicitis to Head CT’s, and interact with patients and ER staff in a level I trauma center.
